Mission Statement |
Life and Independence for Today (LIFT is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization developed by people with disabilities for people with disabilities. As a Center for Independent Living (CIL), LIFT offers services to enable people with disabilities to achieve new goals and broaden their horizons. It enables them to achieve and maintain self-sufficient and productive lives. Most services are provided free of charge and available to all age groups.
The mission of Life and Independence for Today states-
"People with disabilities working with people with disabilities to give them the knowledge and resources to live as independently as they are able."
Life and Independence for Today was established in 1994 as a result of a spin-off from Community Resources for Independence, formerly Erie Independence House. This CIL was originally started in 1987, as a satellite office of Erie Independence House. For seven years, the satellite office was able to grow and evolve to the point of self-sufficiency. As a CIL, LIFT is required to provide the following four core services: advocacy, peer counseling, independent living skills (ILS) training and information and referral. By best representing the needs of the community and people with disabilities, LIFT has added accessibility and deaf and hard of hearing services. Through hard work and dedication, LIFT has become well known throughout its six county service area as a leader in providing disability-related services to consumers, family members and the community at large. LIFT's service area includes Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, McKean, and Potter counties.
