Regional Action Teams

At the present time LIFT sponsors eight Regional Action Teams. Each group is part of the StateWide Action Team (SWAT).
SWAT is funded through the Pennsylvania Statewide Independent Living Counsel (SILC). The SWAT is a consumer controlled cross-disability, statewide advocacy effort, to effect systems change for persons with disabilities.
Each action team is comprised of people with and without disabilities who advocate for disability-related issues on a local and state level.

Training is provided to teach an individual with a disability to exercise his or her rights to self-advocate. This assistance is available not only to consumers, but also to their families and to organizations that want to teach people self-advocacy skills.

We teach consumers how to achieve the independent lifestyle they desire. This is accomplished through periodic advocacy workshops, teaching individual consumers how to handle situations requiring advocacy, providing information which affects the individual's quality of life, and encouraging consumers to become involved in issues which affect them.
