Rural Transportation Program for Persons with Disabilities
(PWD)
Through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania the Shared-Ride Program for Persons with Disabilities transportation is available at a discounted rate to those under the age of 65 with a disability. The PwD Program, as it is know, began as a pilot project in 2001 and gradually expanded to more counties. Now 65 counties have the program. Allegheny and Philadelphia Counties have other programs.The PwD Program is funded through a grant provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT). Disabled residents living in Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, McKean, and Potter counties are eligible to apply for PwD program. Qualified persons will receive a discount on all shared-ride services. Who will qualify for the PwD program? Any individual that meets the ADA definition of a disability. This includes people with physical disabilities, MH/MR disabilities, and even temporary disabilities such as a broken leg, or a knee replacement. Once qualified for the PwD Program, qualified individuals will be able to ride all shared-ride services operated by the
Area Transportation Authority
(ATA).

Medical Assistance Transportation Program
(MATP)
You may be able to get help with transportation you need to get to and from medical providers if you or anyone in your family is a Medical Assistance recipient. The Medical Assistance Transportation Program (MATP) provides rides to medical care at no cost to you. You can also get mileage reimbursement if you use your own car or find someone willing to give you a ride. You can use MATP to get to any health care service that is covered by Medical Assistance. MATP can arrange a ride for you using vans, taxis, or accessible vehicles for persons with disabilities. If you can ride a bus, and you do not live far from a bus route, you may be reimbursed for the cost of riding the bus or for any parking and turnpike toll costs involved in your trip. If you are registering a child who is under 18, a parent or guardian can accompany the child to their appointments at no cost.
